January 9, 1970 , Brother Della reported the tickets for the February 28 dance are available.

 

Brother Shepherd reported on the Milwaukee County Labor Council Institute to be held on January 17th at the Sheraton Schroeder Hotel.

 

Business Agent Powlet is in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer and blood donations are requested on his behalf.

 

The referendum on the Strike Fund will be held on January 23rd with the polls open all day and until the close of the Lodge Meeting.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase one annual membership in the Milwaukee AFL-CIO Representative Club at a cost of $22.50 for Brother Frakes. (2) To allow Business Agent Pattow to have the committee from Perfex Company, Local 1693, to use our hall on the first Thursday of every month with him being responsible to open and close the hall. (3) To purchase ten more tickets for the District 10 Joint Installation Dinner to be sold at a two for the price of one to the five remaining members on the waiting list.

 

January 23, 1970, applications of 27 day workers and 21 night workers were read and approved. President Butcher and past President Jenss initiated the day workers.

 

Brother Della reported the Lodge Dance is being held on February 28th at American Serb Hall and all unsold tickets must be returned by February 19th.

 

Sister Raute presented the semi-annual audit report for the Audit Committee and it was accepted as presented.

 

Brother Shepherd reported on the Institute of Welfare he attended.

 

There was a motion, second and passed to send a letter to each shop steward requesting them to solicit $1.00 from each member for the GE Strike Fund.

 

A letter will be sent to every member requesting their assistance for the GE Strikers. The letter will be sent along with a buyer’s card for Art Anderson Jewelers and will be sent at the full expense of Art Anderson.

 

That we set January 29, 1970 at 6:00PM as another night for the Lodge to participate in the GE boycott picketing.

 

Business Agent Pattow reported that Business Agent Powlet was in the hospital and in need of 12 pints of blood donated in his name.

 

Brother Jenss reported that emergency good was available at three locations in the city.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to District 145 of Hialeah, Florida. (2) To request permission from the Grand Lodge to reduce the initiation and reinstatement fees to $12.50 for a period of 60 days for the employees at Huebsch Originators. (3) To send our president to one of the 1970 Special Machinists Union Non Partisan Political League Campaign Caucuses with usual expenses to be borne by the Lodge. (4) To accept the joint recommendation to transfer our banking action from the Continental Bank to Midland Bank. (5) That we send up to 12 delegates to the one day Area COPE Conference being held in Chicago on March 15 and the Lodge will cover the expenses of two cars and a meal for each delegate.

 

February 13, 1970 , the applications of 12 night workers and 30 day workers were read and approved. They were initiated by President Butcher and past President Jenss.

 

Brother Shanahan reminded members the Lodge Dance is on February 28th at American Serb Hall and all unused tickets or the money must be turned in by February 19th.

 

Sister Raute reported for the Education Committee. They recommended sending up to three students to the Leadership I school to be held in Madison and up to three to the Leadership II School to be held in Urbana , Illinois . Students attending Leadership I will receive room, board, tuition and $30.00 for expenses. Students attending Leadership II will receive room, board, tuition, 40 hours of lost time, and $30.00 for expenses. Travel allowance for one car to each school will be paid by the Lodge.

 

Brother Parker read the first reading of the proposed Lodge Bylaw changes.

 

Business Agent Pattow conveyed thanks from the committeemen and stewards of Perfex, Lodge 1693, for the use of the hall for their committeeman’s meeting.

 

Brother Butcher commented on the showing for our GE boycott picketing. He also commented the members from the Industry for the Blind for their turn out at the boycott picketing.

 

Brother Fredrick mentioned the School for Workers was organized here in 1925 and also that $50 billion will have been paid out in Unemployment Compensation sometime this coming fall.

 

Brother Jenss reported that anyone with a driver’s license and their birthday is on an odd day must have their eyes checked before renewing their driver’s license in 1970 or 1971.

 

Brother Frakes reported the Strike Referendum passed by a three to one margin.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to District 145 of Hialeah, Florida; Lodge 758 of Burbank, California; and AIW Local 806 of Milwaukee. (2) To purchase 20 tickets to the Grape Boycott Festival to be held by the A.O. Smith Steelworkers on February 27th at a cost of $30.00. (3) To purchase three tickets to the retirement party for Business Agent Zinda of Lakeland District 68 and to make a $10.00 donation towards the gift. The party will be held on April 18th at the Lake Lawn Lodge in Lake Delevan . The costs of the tickets are $12.00 each and are to be used by Brothers Butcher, Frakes and Jenss. (4) To cancel our regular meeting of March 27th which is Good Friday and the Executive Board will act on behalf of the Lodge. (5) To send Sisters Raute, Kinder and any other women members of an appropriate number to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Women’s Conference to be held at Wisconsin Rapids on March 7th. The total cost of registration travel and expenses will be $20.00 each.

 

February 27, 1970 , the applications of 22 day workers and 14 night workers were read and approved.

 

Brother Della reported on the Lodge Dance to be held this Saturday night at American Serb Hall.

 

Bylaws change was moved and seconded to change Article III, Section 1, and Paragraph 1 to read as follows: “The regular monthly dues of the Lodge shall be $6.50. Delinquency for three months in the payment of dues shall automatically cancel membership, all rights, privileges and benefits in the Lodge. (effective 4/1/1970 )” A vote by secret ballot resulted in a vote of 188 for and 118 against and 4 vote ballots. There was a motion and seconded to have a 2nd vote. The motion lost by a vote of 116 for and 123 against.

 

A motion was seconded and passed to table the meeting until a Sunday. The Executive Board to pick a Sunday in which to hold the meeting.

 

The meeting was recessed by the previous motion.

 

March 13, 1970 , the applications of 31 day workers and 13 night workers were read and approved.

 

Brother Della reported that date of the fall dance is November 21st and the dates in 1971 are March 27th and October 31st.

 

Brother Shepherd reported the Education Committee has chosen six candidates for Leadership I and Leadership II. He also reported on the film “Don’t Fold, Spindle or Mutilate” and that Brother Fredericks will talk on Swiss bank accounts at the March 19th Committeemen’s Meeting.

 

Sister Raute gave a report of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Women’s Conference.

 

Brother Frakes spoke on the importance of attending the meeting on Sunday, March 15th at 1:00PM regarding the Lodge Bylaws change.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase 20 tickets at $.75 each to the Milwaukee County Council of Auxiliaries Annual Card Party to be held at Staub Hall on April 12th. (2) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to District 145 of Hialeah, Florida; Lodge 2272 of Nashville, Tennessee; and Lodge 1033 of Olney, Illinois. (3) To send the financial secretary to one of the seminars for secretary treasurers to be held in Washington , DC .

 

Brother Butcher appointed Brothers Rudd, Kania, Mikelski, Turtenwald and Chrocker as extra sentinels for the March 15th meeting.

 

March 15, 1970, the special called meeting was called to order and to keep order only one speaker at a time all and speakers must use the microphone.

 

Motion to amend Article III, Section 1, Paragraph 1 to read: “The regular monthly dues of this Lodge shall be $6.50. Delinquency for three months in the payment of dues shall automatically cancel membership, all rights, privileges and benefits in the Lodge. (effective 4/1/1970 )  The motion passed on a secret ballot of 166 for and 145 against.

 

Motion seconded and passed to amend Article II, Section 5 to read: “The initiation and reinstatement fee for all members shall be $30.00.”

 

Motion seconded and passed to amend Article II, Section 5a to read: “Any new initiate who takes the obligation of membership at the Initiation Meeting held on the Thursday prior to the regular Lodge Meeting will receive a $5.00 credit.”

 

Motion seconded and passed to amend Article I, Section 2 to read: “Regular Meeting of this Lodge shall be held on the 2nd Friday of each month and shall be open for business at 8:00PM .”

 

Motion seconded but lost by a voice vote to amend Article VI, Section 9, paragraph 2 to read: “Shop Committeemen will be compensated for expenses at the rate of $25.00 per year plus $2.50 for each regular Lodge or Committeemen’s Meeting they attend. Committeemen must sign the roster book and have their shop credential card punched by the Sentinel. Any night Committeemen elected as such will be compensated $50.00 for expenses incurred during the calendar year in which they represent the shop as night committeemen. Refunds to be made at the Regular Committeemen’s Meeting in December.”

 

Motion seconded and passed to delete Article VI, Section 9, paragraph 1 which read: “Shop Committeemen must have evidence of membership standing for the month prior to the meeting.”

 

April 10, 1970 , under the meeting report there was the request to hold over the giving of a withdrawal card to Brother Kornowski.

 

Brother Shepherd reported on the Teach-In on pollution to be held by the Milwaukee County Labor Council and that Grand Lodge Representative Lamanski, a Trustee for the IAM Pension Fund, would be the speaker at the next Committeemen’s Meeting on April 16th.

 

Brother Jenss reported on the Committee on Political Education (COPE) Conference which was held in Chicago and on a list of anti-Labor Bills which have been introduced in the House and the Senate.

 

Brother Kania questioned the procedure with the new initiates. President Butcher displayed the packet which is given to all new members.

 

A question was raised about the IAM Death Benefits which were frozen in April 1961.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To give a $5.00 credit to new initiates who come to the special orientation meeting on the Thursday prior to the regular meeting. (2) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 1377 or Waukesha and to the GE Strikers in Palmer, Puerto Rico . (3) To send a $100.00 donation to the Farm Workers of Wisconsin. (4) To pay the registration fee for any interested members who reside in the 9th Congressional District and who attend the 9th District Joint COPE Conference in Waukesha on May 16th. (5) To purchase 100 of the 2” X 2.5” plastic “Shop Committee” Badges at a cost of $25.00.

 

May 8, 1970 , motion and second and did pass to endorse the resolution on Ex Parte Injunctions as passed by the Executive Council of the IAM & AW.

 

Brother Shepherd reported on the Educational Classes scheduled to be held in October and also about Brother Heidenreich attending the stockholders meeting of Cutler Hammer to voice the workingman’s point of view.

 

Sister Raute gave an extensive report on the meeting of the Wisconsin Consumers League and on the meeting of the Coalition for Clean Air.

 

Brother Frakes reported that Brother Jenss was in St. Joseph ’s Hospital.

 

Brother Spehert reported we had won a representation election at Vulcan Materials on March 27 and negotiations are in process. Also Bor-Ko Industries was won on May 1st and an election is scheduled for May 15th at Northland Industries. He further reported he was working on organizing at the Falk Corporation and Lodge 66 is no longer responsible for paying 50% of his salary.

 

Brother Kania requested the recent changes to our Bylaws be sent to all the shops for posting and discussed the problem of getting the new members to attend the orientation meetings.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Schuyler Lodge 1794 of North Adams , Massachusetts . (2) To purchase 20 additional tickets to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Statewide COPE fund raising program to be held on June 6th at the Milwaukee Auditorium at a cost of $200.00. (3) To cancel the Committeemen’s Meetings for the months of June, July and August. (4) At the request of the PAC to purchase 10 IAM watches which will be turned over to the PAC and used by them to raise money for the political action fund. (5) To send Brother Frakes to the Midwest States Council of Machinists to be held on May 22nd and 23rd in Wichita , Kansas . (6) To close the Lodge office on May 29th for the Memorial Day Holiday. (7) To send $50.00 donation to the Milwaukee Grape Boycott Committee.

 

A forty minute file “The State of the Unions” was shown.

 

June 12, 1970 , Brother Frakes gave a report on the Midwest States Council of Machinists Conference and the resolutions which were adopted.

 

Business Agent Pattow spoke on the Allen Bradley strike.

 

Brother Spehert told that Brother Jirikowic had been injured and was at Trinity Memorial Hospital . He further did mention he was conducting an organizing drive at the Sprague Company along with talking about the $2,000.00 per month grant which the District is receiving for organizing.

 

Sister Raute proposed a resolution on the public service company using consumer dollars for advertising and to forward the resolution to the Milwaukee County Labor Council for their support. She also requested the Lodge check on the possibility of getting copies of the Machinists and the Milwaukee Labor Press in brail for our blind members.

 

Brother Frakes talked about the new District 10 IAM watches.

 

It was mentioned that Brother Jenss had been released by his doctor.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 1988 of Sterling, Illinois; Lodge 1432 of Portland, Oregon; and Lodge 886 of Trona, California. (2) To send a $100.00 strike donation to UE Local 1111 of the Allen Bradley Corporation. (3) To purchase a $10.00 ad in the 1970 District 10 Gold Jamboree Program Book. (4) To support the proposed IAM Specialized Schools.

 

July 10, 1970, Brother Shepherd presented the semi annual audit report which was accepted by the membership.

 

President Butcher reported on the fine job done by the Lodge in helping the Wisconsin AFL-CIO COPE on their first computerized list of Union members for voter registration drives and get out the vote drives.

 

Brother Frakes did mention the Lodge 66 Eye referral lists were available and spoke about the IAM watches had made are available at the office.

 

Business Agent Pattow spoke on the expansion of District 10 and its problems of added work and also the added work because of the recession. He mentioned that many companies are building solid cases now in an effort to discharge those they do not want. He spoke on the Brewery Machinists Fund raising effort.

 

Brother Wambach reported the Executive Board had met with Directing Business Representative Heidenreich on the problems with the expansion of the District and complained about the increased work load with out an increase in the service staff.

 

There was a motion, seconded and passed to send a letter to Directing Business Representative Heidenreich stating our feelings about the expansion of the District and not expanding the staff to handle the area.

 

Members from Western Machine requested a group meeting to arrange for the election of replacements for the vacancies on their shop committee.

 

There was a motion, seconded and passed to advance money to the committee of Babcox & Wilcox for the lost time received while handling grievances until District 10 reimburses them for lost time.

 

Sister Raute gave a report on some consumer affairs and there was a motion, seconded and passed for Lodge 66 to go on record in support of the Tydings Eckhardt class action bill and proper steps be taken by the office to notify the proper authorities of such action.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 1528 or Modesto, California; Lodge 168 of Longview, Texas; Lodge 451 of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; and Lodge 1918 of Benton Harbor, Michigan. (2) To send the president of the Lodge and chairman of the Machinists Union Non Partisan Political League Committee to the special COPE rally to be held on August 17 at the Red Carpet Inn. (3) To purchase five tickets to an afternoon with Senator Schreiber for Lieutenant Governor to be held on July 19th at the Pfister at a cost of $10.00 each. (4) To send Brothers Hensen and Gunther to an IAM Political Education Conference being held on August 1st and 2nd at the University of Wisconsin Madison . (5) To hold the Executive Board Meeting on July 21 at 7:30PM instead of July 23rd because of the conflict with the County COPE meeting. (6) To resubmit the lost time bills from the committee at Babcox and Wilcox to the Trustees of District 10 .

 

August 14, 1970, Trustee’s made the following recommendations: which were moved seconded and passed. The Secretary Treasurer is instructed to transfer to the Building Fund $11,000.00 for which the Building Fund will pay to the General Fund 6% interest on a semi-annual basis. Any money loaned to the Building Fund will be explicitly used to reduce the balance of the building loan with Metropolitan Savings and Loan Company which was $59,111.10 on July 31, 1970. Moved seconded and passed the Secretary Treasurer be instructed to transfer to the Building Fund on a continual basis all money from the General Fund in excess of $20,000.00 increments of not less than $1,000.00 for which the Building Fund will pay to the General Fund 6% interest on a semi-annual basis. Any money loaned to the Building Fund will be explicitly used to reduce the balance of the building loan with Metropolitan Savings and Load Company which was $59,111.10 on July 31, 1970.

 

Brother Shepherd reported the Education Committee met on August 6th and reported on a film “I am Somebody.”

 

Brother Jenss reported on the Machinists Union Non Partisan Political League Committee on the proposed Public Opinion Survey and on working on the COPE (Committee on Political Education) voter registration list. Volunteers for either of these programs were asked to give their names to one of the officers. He urged the selling of the voluntary Machinists Union Non Partisan Political League (MNPL) raffle tickets.

 

Business Agent Spehert reported on his organizing activities and did mention that Bor-Ko Industries was closing on October 31, 1970.

 

Business Agent Pattow reported on the work stoppage at the Perfex Corporation.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To appoint Brother Frederick as a delegate from Lodge 66 to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Convention with no expenses to be borne by the Lodge. (2) To contribute $50.00 to the IAM Hurricane Celia Fund. (3) To purchase 400 tickets at $1.00 each to the Annual COPE Harvest Dance to be held at the Sheraton Schroeder Hotel on October 16, 1970. (4) To purchase six tickets at $25.00 each to an Evening with Tom Jacobson to be held at the Sheraton Schroeder Hotel on August 29, 1970. (5) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 2272 of Nashville , Tennessee ; Lodge 2212 of Cookeville , Tennessee . (6) To purchase ten tickets at $7.50 each to a Champagne Party for Robert Huele for State Assembly being held at New Homestead on August 30, 1970.

 

September 11, 1970, Brother Frakes gave the quarterly report of the Board of Directors of the Building Corporation. He also announced his appointment to the Grand Lodge Auditors Staff effective September 29, 1970 and he would send his letter of resignation as soon as he received his official confirmation.

 

Brother Jenss reported for the MNPL Committee on the COPE Conference he attended at the Red Carpet Inn. Motion was seconded and passed to contribute $50.00 to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO to be used for the rental of a sound truck for the GOTV (Get Out The Vote) Campaign.

 

Business Agent Spehert reported on his organizing activities.

 

Business Agent Pattow spoke on the activities of Lodge 66 in District 10 and in the Grand Lodge.

 

President Butcher appointed Brother Gunther as temporary Secretary Treasurer until the elections in December.

 

President Butcher appointed Brother Hasse as temporary Trustee until the elections in December.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 437 of Racine, Wisconsin; Lodge 1005 of Portland, Oregon; Local 200 of the Pulp, Sulphite, & Papermill Workers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (2) To send a $100.00 strike donation to the Perfex Lodge 1693 of Milwaukee , Wisconsin . (3) A joint recommendation with the MNPL Committee to purchase one book of MNPL tickets in the name of the Lodge out of the MNPL Fund. (4) To make a temporary appointment for the position of Secretary Treasurer until nominations in November and elections in December. (5) To make a temporary appointment for the position of Trustee until nominations in November and elections in December 1970.

 

October 9, 1970, Brother Jenss spoke for the MNPL Committee and did mention raffling off two of the IAM watches for the Political Action fund.

 

Brother Parker gave the first reading of the proposed Bylaws changes from the Bylaws Committee. (1) To change Article IV, Section 1, paragraph 3 to read, “The elected delegates of this Lodge shall be delegates to the District Board in accordance to the number of members, delegates of the Milwaukee County Labor Council in accordance to the number of members, Delegates to the Wisconsin State Council of Machinists who shall also serve as the delegates to the Midwest States Conference of Machinists and the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO Convention.” (2) To change Article VI, Section 9, Paragraph 2 to read; “Shop Committeemen will be compensated for expenses at the rate of $25.00 per year plus $3.00 for each regular Lodge or Committeemen’s Meeting they attend. Any 2nd shift Committeemen elected as such will be compensated $50.00 for expenses incurred during the calendar year in which they represent the shop as 2nd shift Committeemen. Refunds to be made at the Regular Committeemen Meeting in December. Committeemen must sign the roster book and have their shop credential card punched by the Sentinel.”

 

Brother Shepherd reported on the film “First Man on the Moon” and that Mr. Pollachek would be at the Committeemen Meeting on November 19th. He also spoke on the air pollution problems.

 

Brother Piek talked about the coming Lodge nominations and elections. Motion was seconded and passed to allow all final candidates for a position on the Executive Board a chance to speak for three minutes at the November nominations meeting if they so desired.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase six tickets at two for $25.00 to cocktails with Tom Jacobson to be held on October 11th at the Performing Arts Center. (2) To purchase 400 IAM 1971 Calendars to be distributed to the membership. (3) To send one delegate to the Brewery Machinists Conference in St. Louis, Missouri from October 27th to 30th and the delegate to be selected at the Brewery Machinists Meeting on Sunday, October 11th. (4) To close the Lodge office on November 26th, 27th, December 24th, 25th, 31st and January 1st. The Executive Board to act on behalf of the Lodge on Tuesday November 24th and December 22nd. (5) To purchase 20 tickets at $1.00 each for a rally for Tom Jacobson at Serb Hall on October 22nd. (6) To purchase 25 tickets to the Bean Feed for Joseph Jones at Local 19806 Hall.

 

November 13, 1970, Brother Della gave the annual Trustee Report concerning officer’s salaries, per diem, and travel expense for the following year. Motion was seconded and passed to amend the motion on travel expense to read tourist or coach instead of first class. The remainder of the report was by motion adopted. He reported for the Entertainment Committee that all tickets for the Dance are to be turned in by November 19th.

 

Brother Parker reported for the Bylaws Committee. (1) A motion was seconded and passed to change Article IV, Section 1, Paragraph 3 of the Lodge Bylaws to read: “The elected delegates of this Lodge shall be: delegates of the District Board in accordance to the number of members; delegates to the Milwaukee County Labor Council in accordance to the number of members; Delegates to the Wisconsin State Council of Machinists who shall also serve as the delegates to the Midwest States Conference of Machinists and the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO convention.”

The nominations of officers took place:

·                    Directing Business Representative of District 10 , Brother Heidenreich.

·                    President, Brother Butcher and with no other nominations a unanimous ballot was cast.

·                    Vice President, Brothers Hensen and Ruud

·                    Secretary Treasurer, Brothers Gunther and Pearson

·                    Recording Secretary, Brother Parker and with no other nominations a unanimous ballot was cast.

·                    Trustee (1 year term), Brothers Haas (46 votes), Harmmes (13 votes), Piek (39 votes), and Sister Raute (20 votes)

·                    Trustee (3 year term), Brothers Wambach (76 votes), Lockwood (28 votes), and Siebt (9 votes).

·                    Sentinel, Brothers Preuss, Oldenburg

·                    Conductor, Brother Krebs and with no other nominations a unanimous ballot was cast.

·                    Application Secretary, Sister Larson and with no other nominations a unanimous ballot was cast.

 

Brother Heidenreich spoke about the activities of the District and also the role the trade labor movement placed in the last election.

 

President Butcher did appoint Brothers Kasarowski, Keuhn and Sister Sadowski as tellers for the election on December 11th and with Sister Bobo as an alternate.

 

A motion was seconded and passed to pay the tellers $60.00 each to handle the entire election and tallying the votes.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 2036 of Hastings, Minnesota; Lodge 1238 of Dubuque, Iowa; Woodworkers Local 284 of Marshfield, Wisconsin. (2) To donate $100.00 to the International Guiding Eyes. (3) To purchase two tickets at $2.50 each to the 6th Annual Convention of the Allied Council of Senior Citizens of Wisconsin to be held at Washington Park Senior Center on November 21st.

 

December 11, 1970, Brother Della reported for the Entertainment Committee on the plans for the 75th Anniversary Party and also thanked the members for their participation at the Lodge Dance.

 

Brother Spehert gave a brief history of Lodge 66 for its 75 years of existence since the renewal of its charter.

 

Brother Shepherd reported for the Education Committee that Initiation Meetings will be held on a bi-monthly basis because of the decline in number of new initiates; they are discussing setting up classes for pre-retirement information; the 1971 IAM Calendars are available from the office; and members should read the Milwaukee Labor Press and The Machinists as a matter of self education.

 

Sister Raute spoke about the Wisconsin Usury Law and the suit against J.C. Penney; talked about the estimated bills being received from the Gas and Electric Company; mentioned the Union Toy and Union Prescription Centers are not associated with the AFL-CIO.

 

Business Agent Pattow reported on the severance pay which was negotiated with the Johnson Service Company; that Smith-Lee is closing its plant; and tickets are available for the Brewery Machinists Christmas Party drawing.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To contribute $100.00 to the City of Hope . (2) To purchase four tickets at $6.00 each to an institute on “The Health Care Crisis in America ,” to be held January 16 at the Sheraton Schroeder Hotel. (3) To donate $100.00 to the “Vernon E. Jirikowic Educational Memorial Fund.” (4) To purchase ten tickets at $2.50 to a party for Jim Wahner being held on December 15th at the Bricklayers Hall. (5) To donate $25.00 to the “League of Women Voters.” (6) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to District 90 of Indianapolis, Indiana; Lodge 1471 of Columbus , Ohio . (7) To donate $25.00 to the AFL-CIO Youth Camp at Poynette , Wisconsin .

 

January 15, 1971, the results of the Lodge elections were read and by motion accepted as given.

 

Brother Hensen reported on the negotiations which took place between the District Board and the Business Agents.

 

Brother Shepherd reported for the Educational Committee: representatives from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services will present a program at the Committeemen’s Meeting on January 21st; pointed out some interesting articles in the Milwaukee Labor Press and The Machinists; did mention the institute sponsored by the Milwaukee County Labor Council on the “Health Care Crisis.”

 

Brother Wambach did mention that official communications had gone out from the District requesting the additional of two representatives to go on staff.

 

Business Agent Pattow reported the National Labor Relations Board election of the office workers at Perfex had been lost but the election at Deltrol Corporation was won by a big margin. He is going to have a meeting this Saturday morning with 26 new Committeemen to give them a short orientation. He also reported on other grievances and disputes he was working on.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase six tickets at $10.00 each to a testimonial dinner to honor George Hall, former Secretary Treasurer of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, on February 3rd at Expo Milwaukee. (2) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 172 of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Lodge 1553 of Rockford , Illinois .

 

February 12, 1971, Brother Jenss reported for the Entertainment Committee on the 75th Anniversary Party. Tickets for this affair would be reserved for members of Lodge 66 until April 1st at which time tickets not sold will be available to anyone.

 

Brother Shepherd, Education Committee, announced a speaker on Unemployment Compensation is scheduled for the Committeemen Meeting of February 18th.

 

Sister Raute presented the semi-annual audit report for the Audit Committee. It was noted that Grand Lodge Auditor Naffe was requested to go through the audit but was not available. A motion was seconded and passed to accept the audit.

 

Highlights of an article in Scouting Magazine were pointed out as to how Labor was worked with and helped out the scouting program.

 

Brother Frederick pointed out some of the proposed changes in the Workmen’s Compensation and Unemployment Compensation Laws.

 

Business Agent Pattow reported on the contract negotiations with the Milwaukee Sewerage Commission.

 

A short discussion on a problem with unsafe working conditions and the state safety commission was held.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) to send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 641 of Lewisville, North Carolina; Lodge 248 Amalgamated Meat Cutters of Milwaukee. (2) To send Sister Raute to the Annual Meeting of the United Community Services to be held on February 22nd at the Sheraton Schroeder Hotel. (3) For the Lodge to send up to three members to the Leadership I Schools to be held in Madison and up to three to the Leadership II school to be held in Urbana , Illinois . Students attending Leadership I will receive $10.00 per day for expenses plus their tuition. Students attending Leadership II will receive 40 hours of lost time, tuition and $10.00 per day for expenses. Travel allowance will be paid for one car to each school. (4) To send Vice President Hensen to the 5th Bi-Annual Labor Management Apprenticeship Conference to be held from March 9th to 10th in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

 

March 12, 1971, Brother Jenss gave an Entertainment Committee report for the 75th anniversary.

 

Brother Spehert reported on some of his activities and did mention he won representation election at Deltrol and has one schedules for Grover Piston on April 15th.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send Brother Butcher and Jenss to the Wisconsin Legislative Conference in Madison from March 19th and 20th. (2) To send our secretary treasurer to one of the four day seminars for financial officers to be held in Washington , DC .

 

April 16, 1971, Brother Della gave an Entertainment Committee report on the 75th Anniversary Party and suggested to move the May 14th meeting to May 7th. There was a motion, seconded and passed to keep the May 14th meeting. It was suggested that a poster be made for the 75th Party with information as to what bus routes were available and at what stops to get off the bus.

 

The following Executive Board recommendation did pass to send Brother Jenss to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Conservation Committee being held on April 24th in Wausau , Wisconsin .

 

May 14, 1971, Sister Larson reported on the menu and showed the booklet for the 75th Anniversary Party.

 

Brother Shepherd reported on the Education Committee meeting of May 3rd and also spoke on the export of jobs to foreign countries.

 

Brother Jenss reported on the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Conservation Committee meeting. He spoke of pollution which is caused by everyone.

 

A project of miniature beer barrels made by a few retired Machinists from District 10 was displayed and available for purchase.

 

Brother Helm will not be able to attend the 75th Anniversary Party and there was a motion, second and passed to send a letter and booklet to him.

 

Brother Gunther will present the orientation given to new members at the Committeemen’s Meeting of May 20th and it was moved, seconded and passed to have that meeting open to all members.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase 20 tickets at $1.00 each to the West Allis J.C.’s Circus and the tickets to be given to children. (2) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 818 of Wheeling, West Virginia; Lodge 646 of Mystic, Connecticut; Lodge 1848 of Flin Flon, Manitoba; Lodge 225 of Dayton, Ohio. (3) To donate $25.00 to the Easter Society of Milwaukee. (4) To cancel the Committeemen’s Meeting for the months of June, July and August. (5) To send a fourth member to the Leadership I School in Madison .

 

June 11, 1971, Sister Raute reported on the Union Counselor School graduation dinner as well as the various services available by Union Counselors and that a sickle cell anemia clinic is to be held June 14th at Local 19806 DALU Hall. She also reported on consumer affairs like buying a swimming pool, recycling paper and on a petition for the proper labeling of products.

 

Brother Gunther reported on the settling of the Deltrol Controls contract and the tickets for the voluntary sale of the 1971 Machinists Union Non Partisan Political League raffle tickets are available.

 

President Butcher appointed Brother Krebs as a delegate to District 10 to replace Brother Jenss. He also asked that anyone interested in serving on any of the committees which Brother Jenss did serve on to contact him.

 

A short discussion was held on not having a Lodge picnic.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 1127 of La Porte, Indiana; Lodge 1319 of Mount Gilead, Ohio; Lodge 2369 of Cookville, Tennessee; and Lodge 797 of Elmhurst, New York. (2) To purchase 35 copies of the book “Talks with Stewards” at $1.00 each. The books to be offered to members for a $.50 deposit if book is not returned in two weeks the member keeps the book for the $.50 deposit.

 

July 9, 1971, Brother Gunther reported that the sale of the District 10 voluntary Machinists Union Non Partisan Political League raffle tickets is available.

 

Brother Reese announced the books “Talks with Stewards” were available from the office.

 

Brother Parker reported on the conference on the 1970 Occupational Health and Safety Laws.

 

There was a problem with the signing of the contract at Milwaukee Solvay Coke and the matter was referred to the Executive Board for an answer.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase a table of eight at $10.00 each to the civic recognition for John Zinos to be held at the Bradley Pavilion on July 27th. (2) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 2187 of Lebanon , Missouri . (3) To purchase ten tickets at $1.00 each to the Milwaukee County Democratic Corn Roast to be held at Arcadian Park on August 28th and 29th. (4) To have the Entertainment Committee to purchase 10 IAM watches to be given as door prizes at the Lodge Fall Dance.

 

August 13, 1971, Brother Shepherd presented the semi-annual Audit Report with was accepted by the membership.

 

The sale of the voluntary Machinists Union Non Partisan Political League (MNPL) raffle tickets was reported and there was a motion, second and passed for the Lodge to purchase one book of the tickets in the name of the Lodge’s MNPL Committee. 

 

Brother Siebt reported on the strike at Spincraft and a collection was taken for the strikers.

 

Business Agent Pattow reported on contract settlements since the last meeting did happen at Power Products, Simplicity, Modern Equipment, Artos and the Breweries.

 

Brother Butcher reported on the District 10 Dental Health Program.

 

Any women members interested in attending the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Women’s Rights Conference were asked to give their names to the office.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 696 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers of Marinette , Wisconsin . (2) To send President Butcher to the Staff Conference and Presidents Education conference being held October 21st and 22nd at the Red Carpet Inn. (3) To purchase 15 tickets at $2.00 each to the Jaycee’s Circus and tickets to be distributed to children’s homes. (4) To send the president and recording secretary to the 5th Annual Wisconsin AFL-CIO Industrial Unions Conference being held from September 2nd to 5th in Eagle River , Wisconsin . (5) To send Sister Raute to the 1971 Leadership Volunteer Training Laboratory being held from October 8th thru 10th at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. (6) To purchase five tickets at $1.00 each to the Lakeland District 68 picnic.

 

September 10, 1971, Sister Raute reported on the Sickle Cell Anemia Hike and motion was seconded and passed to donate $100.00 to the Sickle Cell Anemia Fund and to sponsor up to five hikers.

 

Brother Gunther reported on the Lodge’s Fall Dance.

 

Business Agent Sperhert reported on his organizing activities with the Eastman Corporation in Manitowoc , Ambrosia Chocolate, Southgate Ford (salesmen), Door-o-Matic, lost an election at Wisconsin Novelty, and will be having a Union Shop election at Deltrol Controls.

 

Brother Gunther reported on the Spincraft strike and there was a motion, second and passed to petition the Grand Lodge for strike assistance.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 504 of San Jose, California. (2) To purchase ten tickets at $1.00 each to the Milwaukee Police Band Concert and Dance with the tickets to be given to the retiree club. (3) To contribute $100.00 as Lodge 66’s share from District 10 for General Vice President Brunner’s Retirement Party. (4) To purchase eight tickets at $12.50 each for the retirement party of General Vice President Brunner being held on October 21st at Expo Hall. (5) To send up to four women to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Women’s Rights Conference being held on October 2nd and 3rd at Expo Hall.

 

October 8, 1971, Mr. Warner Shaffer spoke on the United Fund drive.

 

Brother Della reported that October 25th would be the cut off date for tickets for the fall dance.

 

Brother Gunther reported for the PAC and a flyer would be available to use in the shops for the “Big One’ drive. Business Agent Pattow also spoke on the “Big One” drive.

(1) To send two delegates to the 7th Annual Convention of the Allied Council of Senior Citizens of Wisconsin being held on November 20th at the Washington Park Senior Center . (2) To send Brother Pruess to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Conservation Committee Meeting being held on October 23rd in Poynette Young Center in Poynette , Wisconsin . (3) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to District Lodge 174 or Joplin, Missouri; Lodge 1245 of Honolulu, Hawaii; Lodge 727 of Burbank, California; Lodge 449 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. (4) To purchase two tickets at $12.50 each to the retirement party of Grand Vice President Brunner.

 

November 12, 1971, motion seconded and passed to dispense with the normal order of business.

 

Brother Wambach reported for the Trustees and all did pass. (1) To increase the present salaries of the Executive Board $10.00 per quarter as follows; President from $140.00 to $150.00; Vice President from $90.00 to $100.00; Recording Secretary from $130.00 to $140.00; Trustees from $90.00 to $100.00; and Sentinel from $90.00 to $100.00. (2) To increase the following officers and committee salaries $5.00 per quarter as follows; Application Secretary from $28.00 to $33.00; Conductor from $23.00 to $28.00; Classification from $23.00 to $28.00. (3) To increase all existing Committees and Delegates meeting expense from $3.00 to $4.00 per meeting attended.

 

There was the nomination of officers.

·                    Vice President, Brother Oldenburg (23 votes), Brother Lockwood (48 votes), Brother Harmes (29 votes), Sister Raute (18 votes) and two void ballots.

·                    Application Secretary, Sister Larson, and being no other nominee and unanimous ballot were cast.

During the run off voting the Lodge business was transacted.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To send our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 1356 of Defiance , Ohio ; Lodge 1435 of Port St. Joe , Florida .

 

Brother Della reported 442 attended the fall dance and the next dance will be on April 29, 1972.

 

Tickets for the COPE Harvest Dance (Committee on Political Education) are available free to members.

 

December 10, 1971, Sister Jackson reported on the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Civil Rights Conference she attended on November 12th at the Red Carpet Inn.

 

Business Agent Spehert reported that $11,000.00 in severance pay will be paid in connection with the bankruptcy of Barton Manufacturing Company in Campbellsport.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To make a $100.00 donation to the International Guiding Eyes Incorporated. (2) To purchase four tickets at $6.00 each to an institute on “Inflation and Unemployment, The New Nixon Economics” to be held on January 22nd at the Sheraton Schroeder Hotel. (3) To purchase 100 tickets to the District 10 Joint Installation Party being held on January 15th at Country Maid Inn in Cudahy . Tickets are to be sold on a two for one price and the cost of the tickets is $6.50. (4) To give a $25.00 Christmas bonus to the two full time girls and the janitor and a $15.00 Christmas bonus to the part time girl. (5) To donate $60.00 for the band that player prior to the Gil Brunner Retirement Party but it lost on a voice vote.

 

Committeemen were reminded the last Committeemen’s Meeting for the year will be on December 16th.

 

January 14, 1972, newly elected officers were installed by Business Agent Pattow at which time they took their respective newly stations.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase two books of Circus coupons at $15.00 per book to the Shrine Circus being held on February 22nd to 27th and each book of coupons allows 16 children to attend. (2) To send one delegate to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Apprenticeship Conference being held on February 1st and 2nd in Wausau , Wisconsin . (3) To donate $100.00 to the City of Hope . (4) To donate $25.00 to the League of Women Voters. (5) To make our usual $15.00 strike donation to Lodge 254 of Des Moines, Iowa; Lodge 734 of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania .

 

Brother Frederick gave a report on Workman’s Compensation and Unemployment and stressed the need for a federal law to standardize benefits for all workers.

 

Members were reminded of the Milwaukee County Labor Council Seminar on Nixon’s Economics being held on January 22nd at the Sheraton Schroeder Hotel.

 

President Hensen announced that due to the lack of a quorum at the Building Corporation Membership Meeting on January 10th the meeting will be held immediately following the adjournment of this meeting.

 

February 11, 1972, Business Agent Seegar gave progress report on organizing at Grafton Plastics.

 

Business Agent Pattow reported on back pay and wage price stabilization.

 

Brother Della announced that dance tickets were read and are to be sold only to Lodge 66 members until April 1st.

 

Brother Parker reported the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is in charge of wage price stabilization and all violations should be reported to them.

 

Sister Raute reported on the Women’s Equal Rights Bill.

 

Brother Hensen announced the Lodge was accepting bids on the old office typewriters until the next Lodge Meeting. The money received will be placed in the political action fund.

 

The following Executive Board recommendations were approved. (1) To purchase one book of tickets at a cost of $10.00 from Local 742 City of Cudahy Employees, AFL-CIO for their spring dance on March 24th. (2) To purchase 20 tickets to the Wisconsin AFL-CIO Annual Fund Raising Campaign being held on April 15th in Milwaukee at $10.00 per ticket. (3) To purchase 12 IAM wristwatches from the Grand Lodge for the Political Action Committee for a fund raising raffle. (4) To charge all members from other Lodges a fee of $2.00 for the educational school to be conducted by Grand Lodge Representative Scott. (5) To purchase a one year subscription to ‘Memo from COPE’ for all Political Action Committee members.

 

Brother Pruess  announced that Hubert Humphrey is asking for help in his campaign and interested members should contact his headquarters.

 

A rug made by Sister Sadowski was raffled off and the proceeds were placed in the Political Action Fund.

 

President Hensen reminded Shop Chairmen to turn in the names of their committeepersons.

 

March 10, 1972, Brother Shepherd presented the semi annual Lodge Audit Report which was accepted by the Lodge.

 

Sister Larson announced that unsold tickets and monies for the Lodge Dance need to be turned in by April 15th.

 

Brother Della announced the profits from the raffle of the IAM watches will be placed in the Political Action Fund and that tickets could be purchased until the time of the drawing.

 

Sister Raute announced the Milwaukee County Community Services is offering a four week course one night a wee starting on March 28th on the Health and Safety Act. She also told members about a TV program on every Tuesday night on Channel 10 called ‘The Advocates.’ It concerned labor and industry. The program this past week was ‘Should Industry Wide Bargaining Be Outlawed In This Country?’ She informed members they should reply to these programs and urged them to reply to this particular one.
